A Spanish Single Malt Matured in Brandy and Sherry Casks

Carlos I Single Malt Whisky is a Spanish whisky made from 100% Spanish barley and double-distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Its defining feature is a maturation process closely linked to Jerez: it is first aged in Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva casks and subsequently refined in a selection of casks from Osborne's VORS soleras.

This combination creates a whisky with a genuinely Spanish identity. The influence of Jerez is not limited to a brief finishing period, but forms part of the maturation process from the outset and continues throughout the final refinement.

Double Distillation in Copper Pot Stills

The whisky begins with 100% Spanish barley and undergoes double distillation in traditional copper pot stills. This process produces the malt spirit that subsequently develops much of its personality during maturation in the cellars of El Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz.

It is precisely the combination of a Spanish Single Malt and Osborne's heritage of seasoned casks that sets Carlos I Single Malt Whisky apart within a category traditionally dominated by other whisky-producing countries.

Initial Maturation in Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva Casks

Its maturation begins in Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva Brandy de Jerez casks. Before holding the brandy, these casks had previously been seasoned with Oloroso and Amontillado Sherry. The whisky therefore comes into contact with wood that carries the successive influence of both Sherry wines and Carlos I itself.

This first stage contributes subtle sweetness, delicate vanilla nuances and a spicy character to the whisky. This is therefore not simply a finish in casks that previously held brandy. The initial maturation already takes place in casks from the ageing system of Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva.

Final Refinement in Osborne's Historic VORS Soleras

The second stage takes the connection with Jerez even further. The final refinement takes place in an exclusive selection of casks belonging to two Osborne VORS soleras: Amontillado 51-1ª, from a solera founded in 1830, and Oloroso Sibarita, whose solera dates back to 1792.

VORS stands for Vinum Optimum Rare Signatum, a classification reserved for Sherry wines certified as having exceptional age. The use of these casks allows the whisky to absorb the influence of two different styles of Sherry, Amontillado and Oloroso, as well as wood associated with historic soleras.

This process is integrated into the traditional Criaderas y Solera system. The practice of saca y rocío, characteristic of Sherry ageing, keeps the casks within a continuous process in which different generations of wine interact over time. When these casks are subsequently used to refine the whisky, the wood retains the accumulated influence of its previous use.

A Single Malt Built Around the Jerez Ageing Tradition

This sequence is fundamental to understanding the bottle. First comes a double-distilled malt whisky. It is then matured in Carlos I Solera Gran Reserva casks previously seasoned with Oloroso and Amontillado. Finally, it is refined in casks from the historic VORS soleras Amontillado 51-1ª and Oloroso Sibarita.

The result seeks to impart some of the elegance, depth and complexity associated with these casks while preserving the whisky's identity as a Single Malt. The influence of Jerez therefore forms a structural part of the expression rather than simply serving as a finishing technique.

How to Enjoy Carlos I Single Malt Whisky

Given the importance of oak in this expression, we recommend tasting it first neat in a glass that concentrates the aromas. Allowing it to rest for a few minutes gives the whisky time to open up before introducing any dilution.

A small amount of water can also be added. A few drops make it possible to observe how the balance between the malt and the influence of the casks changes. If you prefer it chilled, a large ice cube provides slower dilution than several smaller cubes.

Carlos I Single Malt Whisky is particularly interesting for two types of enthusiast. Those who enjoy whiskies matured or finished in Sherry casks will find a Spanish interpretation with a particularly deep connection to Oloroso and Amontillado. For those already familiar with Carlos I and Osborne's wines, it offers a different way to explore the influence of its historic soleras on a malt spirit.
