Havana Club Iconica Unión: the Cuban rum completing the collection

Discover Havana Club Iconica Unión, a Cuban rum blending four aged reserves to complete the Iconica collection and showcase the brand’s continuous ageing method

Havana Club Iconica Unión arrives as the sixth release in the Iconica collection, the prestige range bringing together some of the brand’s most ambitious rums. It is built around four aged Cuban rums, selected to create a complex blend, and revives a name linked to the culture of rum and the Habano.

Rather than centring on a specific age stated on the label, this release focuses on the work of selecting and blending, and on a method Havana Club calls continuous ageing. Bottled at 40% alcohol, it is described with notes of caramel, honey, dried fruit, toasted wood, citrus peel and a delicate hint of tobacco.

A blend of four Cuban rums

Iconica Unión does not come from a single cask, nor is it defined by a specific age statement. The brand says it combines four aged rums selected from its reserves. The individual ages of these components have not been disclosed, so the bottle’s interest lies less in a single figure than in how their different contributions come together.

In a blended rum, blending can bring different characteristics into balance. One component may add sweetness and body; another, notes of wood or spice; while others contribute fruitier nuances or a more mature impression. For Unión, the published description points to a combination of sweet, citrus, toasted and dried-fruit notes, with a subtle hint of tobacco. These details offer a useful guide to its character, although the final impression will also depend on the glass, temperature and each person’s palate.

This way of presenting the rum contrasts with the tendency to sum up a spirit’s identity with a prominent age statement. In a blend, a single figure may not explain the selection process, the different maturation paths or the role of each reserve. Here, the story focuses on continuity and the work of the maestros roneros.

What does continuous ageing mean?

Continuous ageing is the concept Havana Club places at the heart of Iconica Unión. According to the brand, certain batches of rum mature, are selected and may return to cask before being incorporated into new blends. In this way, reserves from different generations take part in an ongoing process of development and blending, rather than simply leaving the spirit undisturbed in a single vessel for a fixed period.

The brand traces the origins of this practice to José Pablo Navarro Campa, a maestro ronero whose influence it recalls as part of its history. The method aims to maintain a connection between the more mature reserves and later blends, although it should not automatically be confused with traditional solera ageing.

Havana Club describes its system as its own process of selection, blending and successive ageing—not as a claim that Unión is a conventional solera rum.

It is also worth distinguishing the general concept from the details of this bottle: the ages of the four rums and each one’s specific journey through the casks have not been published. It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a blend of aged reserves made using continuous ageing than to assign it an average age or a number of years that has not been stated.

Rum and Habano culture

The name Unión had previously appeared on a Havana Club expression created to accompany a Cuban cigar. The first version was released in 2015 and came from a collaboration between maestro ronero Asbel Morales and cigar specialist Fernando Fernández. The cigar selected for that pairing was the Cohiba Siglo VI.

This connection helps explain the meaning behind the name, but it does not mean the new bottle has to be reserved for a particular occasion. Rum and Habanos have long been part of Cuban culture, and their profiles can complement one another during a leisurely tasting. In general, a rum’s sweet, woody notes can accompany a cigar’s toasted nuances, although the intensity of both should be considered so that neither overwhelms the other.

A presentation for the Iconica collection

The 2026 edition joins Iconica alongside releases such as Selección de Maestros, Gran Reserva 15 Años, Don Navarro, Tributo and Máximo Extra Añejo. Its bottle, called the Iconica decanter, has a silhouette inspired by an hourglass. The design evokes the time and patience associated with maturation, while setting this presentation apart within the collection.

To appreciate the rum, serve it neat in a glass that allows the aromas to gather, and let it rest briefly before tasting. Taking your time helps reveal the notes of dried fruit, citrus and wood, and how the blend develops on the palate. Water can also be served on the side for anyone who would like to explore the spirit with a slightly different aromatic intensity.

With Iconica Unión, Havana Club completes its prestige collection with an expression that puts the focus on blending and the continuity of its reserves. Rather than using an age statement as its central argument, it offers a perspective on Cuban rum shaped by different maturation paths and by the expertise of those who select and blend its components.
