It was Don Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, Marquis of Riscal de Alegre, who in 1860 with his revolutionary ideas would forever mark the course of Spanish wine history. His avant-garde methods imported from Bordeaux, which were criticised at first, changed the way we understand and make our best wines.

Following the avant-garde trail of Bordeaux wines, Marqués de Riscal built the first Spanish winery of the Modern Era in 1860. Located in the heart of Rioja (Elciego, Álava) his works were directed by the prestigious engineer Ricardo Bellsolá.

In 1860, Mr. Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, Marqués de Riscal, abandoned the traditional winemaking methods of the area to inaugurate the Modern Era of Rioja wines. The starting point was the introduction of the culture and technology of wine imported from Bordeaux, at that time the centre of the wine revolution.

Marqués de Riscal, who occupied a consolidated position in the Rioja wine scene, decided to broaden his horizons. Against the tide, he decided to make white wines outside this region. The area chosen was Rueda, because of its long history of winemaking and its exceptional geographical conditions.

The meticulous studies carried out by a technical team led by the eminent French oenologist Emile Peynaud soon obtained the well-deserved reward: the granting of the Rueda Appellation of Origin by the Control Board.
