Maker’s Mark Unveils Its First Bourbon Finished in Japanese Mizunara Oak

Maker’s Mark Expedition 01 is a Kentucky bourbon finished with American, French and Japanese mizunara oak, created for selected airport duty-free stores.

Oak is much more than the vessel in which bourbon matures: it can transform its aromas, texture and finish. Maker’s Mark puts that idea at the heart of its new World Wood Collection, a series created for airport travel retail. The first release, Expedition 01, brings together the influence of three types of wood from different continents.

The expression starts with a Kentucky bourbon and adds finishes using American white oak, French oak and Japanese mizunara.

According to information shared by the brand, each whisky is finished separately before being blended into a single expression. The combination is designed to let each wood contribute its own nuances while preserving bourbon’s distinctive character.

What each type of oak brings to the blend

American white oak is widely used in bourbon production and is often associated with sweet notes such as vanilla, as well as a rounded feel. French oak, also used to mature wines and other spirits, can add warm spice notes and a more enveloping impression. The third wood, mizunara, comes from Japan and is less commonly used for this kind of finish.

In Maker’s Mark’s description, mizunara contributes a floral profile and a subtle umami note. Its inclusion makes Expedition 01 the first expression from the distillery to incorporate staves made from this Japanese oak. The aim is not to replace the traditional wood used for bourbon, but to explore how a finishing stage can broaden the aromatic range of an already-made whisky.

Oak staves as a finishing tool

Staves are pieces of wood placed inside a barrel so the spirit can come into contact with them during finishing. The time involved and the interaction with the drink influence the result, although the information available about Expedition 01 does not specify the duration of each stage or the proportions of the blend. It is therefore more prudent to treat the tasting notes as a stylistic intention shared by the brand, rather than as an independent tasting assessment.

The technique builds on Maker’s Mark’s previous explorations of wood finishing in other expressions. Here, the collection broadens that approach by bringing together oaks from different origins. It also highlights an important point for the category: wood does more than accompany maturation; it is one of the factors with the greatest influence on a spirit’s final profile.

A release made for travellers

Expedition 01 is presented in a one-litre bottle at 47.5% ABV.

Announced distribution is limited to Global Travel Retail stores at selected airports, including New York, London, Istanbul, Perth and Bengaluru, at a recommended price of 64 dollars. This focus makes availability an essential part of the proposition: it is not intended as a general retail launch, but as an option for travellers buying on the move.

Maker's Mark Expedition 01The bottle design also reflects the collection’s concept, with a presentation inspired by the grain of the different woods. Beyond its visual appeal, the central idea is to invite drinkers to compare how bourbon changes when finished with different oaks.

For enthusiasts, it offers an interesting opportunity to focus on the role of finishing; for those new to the category, it shows how two whiskies from the same house can differ noticeably depending on their final contact with wood.

As with any bourbon, it is worth trying it neat first, at room temperature, in a glass that allows the aromas to develop. A few drops of water can then help open it up. This makes it easier to judge whether the sweet nuances of American oak, the spices of French oak and the floral notes attributed to mizunara come together in balance, or whether one stands out more clearly.
