More information Fifty Pounds + Metal case Gin

Fifty Pounds is produced in a small, legendary distillery situated southeast of London, Thames Distillers has been producing gin for more than two centuries.

The distillation process is accomplished in a still designed by John Dore & Co., in which a precise combination of flowers, herbs, fruits, and spices are united with a quality grain.

The distillation process takes place four times, which makes Fifty Pounds of a winning gin.

The list of ingredients is perfectly proportioned, according to the words of the master distiller: “the citruses do not stand out as in other gins, nor the juniper as in other classic recipes, nor other exotic elements that distort or turn the product away from the concept of gin”.

The botanicals of Fifty Pounds are: Juniper, coriander, grains of paradise (Aframomum melegueta), orange peel, lemon peel, licorice, whiteleaf, and angelica root.

The History behind Fifty Pounds

Fifty Pounds takes its name from the Gin Act of 1736, which imposed an annual fee of fifty pounds on those who wished to produce and sell gin. This Act was an (unsuccessful) attempt to curb the fashion for gin.

The bottle is based on the design of the Georgian-era 'gin case', which was narrowed to allow an airtight seal in an era before bubble packaging. Each bottle of Fifty Pounds Gin also bears its individual distillation batch number BATCH No. 01/17, together with the year in which it was distilled.

The production of Fifty Pounds Gin is also marked by history. No shortcuts; a high level of care and attention, from sourcing the finest botanicals to distilling in small batches; in short, the way things used to be done. It is this attention to detail that gives Fifty Pounds Gin its extraordinary smoothness and exceptional quality.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Fifty Pounds Gin is colourless in appearance “water white”, if you will – with spirit tails on the side of the glass

Bouquet: On the nose, it’s classic in character, with a predominant bouquet of juniper and coriander, balanced by its citrus and spice notes.

Taste: On the palate Fifty Pounds Gin is smooth but complex, opening with juniper, but followed by the citrus constituents, and a hint of spice and earthiness. This gives way to a long, fresh finish, that’s clean, dry and with a touch of heat.
