Enrique Mendoza Oraval, a single-site Monastrell with Mediterranean identity
Enrique Mendoza Oraval is born in a singular setting, shaped by history and geology. It comes from the La Laguna de Villena site, a former lagoon drained in 1803 through the Acequia del Rey Carlos IV. That transformation reshaped the landscape and revealed a complex mix of soils that today define the wine’s character.
At Licorea, we value wines that clearly express their origin. Oraval is a true single-site wine where soil and Mediterranean climate are reflected in every glass.
La Laguna de Villena, soil with a story to tell
The artificial drainage of the lagoon created land rich in diapiric outcrops of gypsum, Triassic clays, limestone and Cretaceous dolomite. This combination provides natural drainage and mineral diversity.
For centuries, these lands served as a natural run-off area. Today they allow the cultivation of Monastrell on fresh, well-drained soils. This geological foundation has a direct influence on the wine’s freshness and structure.
Oraval is the direct expression of these complex soils. It is not a uniform wine; its nuances stem from that very diversity.
Traditional viticulture and hand harvesting
The vineyard is planted according to traditional spacing, respecting the vine’s natural rhythm. Monastrell adapts well to the Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and generous sunshine.
The harvest is carried out by hand and in small crates, preserving the full potential of the fresh fruit. After destemming, the grapes are conveyed whole into small stainless-steel tanks.
Alcoholic fermentation takes place under controlled temperature conditions. This preserves aromatic freshness and avoids excessive extraction.
Enrique Mendoza Oraval holds the European V-Label certification as a vegan wine, awarded by the Spanish Vegetarian Union. No animal-derived products are used in its production.
A fresh and versatile Monastrell
Enrique Mendoza Oraval is not a heavy red. Its profile is fresher and more approachable within the Monastrell style. It may surprise those who associate this variety with particularly powerful or highly concentrated wines.
It pairs well with white meats, rice dishes, light stews or Mediterranean cuisine with aromatic herbs. It can also be enjoyed slightly chilled to enhance its fruity character.
