Looking into the history of Indian whisky

Since its creation it has been very popular in India and, as mentioned, its roots go back to the 1960s. The earliest references date from 1898, when Scottish distiller Angus McDowell created the McDowell & Company brand in India, an extension of McDowell Company in Scotland.

More is known about the company after it was acquired by Vittal Mallya, whose business would become United Spirits Limited. After the acquisition in 1951, the company moved into a range of other spirits such as brandy and rum.

This whisky brand, since its launch in 1968, has maintained its success over the years. Initially it was sold only in India, but later it was exported to a handful of Asian countries, where it found some success thanks to affordable prices.

The brand forms part of Diageo LLC’s portfolio in India and remains one of its best-selling variants.
