Laphroaig 15 Returns to the Brand’s Core Range

Laphroaig brings back its iconic 15-year-old Islay single malt as a permanent expression, matured exclusively in American oak after over a decade away.

Laphroaig brings back its legendary 15 Year Old as a permanent part of its core range

Islay whisky fans had been waiting years for this moment. After more than a decade outside the regular line-up, the legendary Laphroaig 15 Year Old officially returns to take a permanent place in the core range of the Scottish distillery.

The decision marks the comeback of one of the brand’s most cherished expressions and puts an end to years of speculation over the possible return of this classic single malt.

Unlike previous commemorative releases, this is not a limited edition. The new Laphroaig 15 Year Old now becomes part of the distillery’s regular offering, sitting among the more mature expressions in its permanent portfolio.

A whisky with a special place in Laphroaig’s history

Laphroaig 15 Year Old first appeared in 1985. It quickly became one of the distillery’s most recognised bottlings thanks to an unusual combination of smoky intensity, maritime influence and the added smoothness brought by years of maturation.

Its reputation even reached the British Royal Household. For years, it has been described as one of the favourite expressions of the then Prince Charles, now King Charles III, a connection that helped strengthen the historic bond between the distillery and the British Crown.

However, in 2009 the expression disappeared from the market and was replaced by Laphroaig 18 Year Old. Later on, that expression also left the regular range, leaving a gap that many enthusiasts considered difficult to fill.

From commemorative release to definitive return

The last time Laphroaig 15 Year Old was available was in 2015, when the distillery celebrated its bicentenary.

That special edition generated huge interest among collectors and followers of the brand. Bottles sold out quickly in many markets and gained particular popularity in countries such as Japan, where Laphroaig has an especially loyal community of fans.

For years, there was speculation that this re-release might be the first step towards a permanent revival of the product. The distillery has now confirmed that its return will be permanent.

Fifteen years of maturation for a more balanced profile

The new version preserves the classic philosophy that made this expression famous.

The whisky matures for fifteen years in American oak casks, a long enough period to soften part of Laphroaig’s characteristic intensity without removing the traits that have made the distillery one of the most recognisable names on Islay.

The result is a single malt in which peat remains centre stage, but appears in a more refined and complex form than in the younger expressions.

The alcoholic strength is 43%, aiming for a balance between accessibility and character.

Tasting notes: smoke, sea and ripe fruit

On the nose, lively citrus notes appear first, accompanied by hints of dried grass, barbecue smoke, vanilla and sweet spices.

The maritime influence, one of Laphroaig’s hallmarks, remains clearly present and combines with softer nuances developed during the long maturation.

On the palate, the entry is marked by salinity and peat smoke, followed by layers of black pepper, cinnamon, clove and subtle herbal touches.

As the seconds pass, fruitier notes emerge, reminiscent of ripe peach and grapefruit, bringing freshness and complexity before leading into a long, persistent and deeply smoky finish.

The role of time in the evolution of Laphroaig’s character

According to the distillery’s master blender, Dr Callum Fraser, the aim was to wait the necessary time for the whisky to reach the exact point of maturation.

Fifteen years of ageing allow the peat to take on a more integrated and elegant texture, preserving the distillery’s identity while offering a different experience from the classic Laphroaig 10 Year Old.

The new addition also completes an age-statement range that once again includes mature references, something highly valued by fans of Islay single malts.

A launch that shows confidence in the distillery’s stocks

The return of the 15 Year Old comes at a complex time for parts of the Scotch whisky industry. In recent years, factors such as the slowdown in some international markets, shifting demand and changes in tariffs have forced many companies to review their production strategies.

However, the return of a fifteen-year-old expression also sends a message of confidence.

Decisions involving whiskies of this age are made many years before the bottles reach the market. The availability of sufficient stocks to make the 15 Year Old a permanent expression indicates that the distillery has reserves ready to support this comeback over the long term.

A modern classic returns to the shelves

With a recommended price of 76.90 euros in Europe, the new Laphroaig 15 Year Old is positioned as one of the most significant additions of the year for Scotch whisky enthusiasts.

Its return not only revives a historic expression within the distillery, but also brings back to the market one of the bottlings that best represents Islay’s ability to combine power, complexity and elegance within a single malt.

For many followers of the brand, this is not simply a new bottle. It is the return of one of Laphroaig’s great classics.
