Lizard liquor: would you dare to try ità

Lizard liquor surprises with reptiles inside the bottle, Chinese tradition, exotic humour and tasting notes from a strange Chinese restaurant tale.

Suddenly, lizard liquor appeared in front of me; I do like exotic things, but these are the moments when I start doubting everything and everyone

I thought I had seen almost everything, but I honestly do not know whether lizard liquor would be one of the drinks I would recommend. Since taste is a very personal matter, here is this look at a drink in which the little animal can be seen inside the bottle.

Recently I found a sort of definition that struck me as interesting: "This cherub is the biological child resulting from a night of passion between a rather easy-going lady ginseng and an Asian gentleman lizard more excited than the tip of a cheese wedge. After years of ejaculation and maceration, it is served cold and without ice".

Drinks with animals inside, from scorpions to snakes, will never cease to amaze me, but according to my limited research they can be explained either by marketing strategies or, in other cases, by the weight of tradition. A liberating experience

Apparently, I am not the only person to have had a traumatic experience with drinks such as lizard liquor. I recently read an account I could identify with: "One day I went to eat with my friends Raúl, Txiki and Txiki’s girlfriend Emma at the Chinese restaurant Palacio Imperial. Despite its pompous name it was rather shabby, but they treated Txiki with affection because he was a regular customer, and they always had some small gesture for us".

The lizard liquor "The lizard liquor was not bad; it tasted like herbal orujo with fruit liqueur".

This opening scene hardly suggests what would happen later, because "the waiter, wearing a white cotton jacket, came out from behind the counter where a girl in a kimono was counting banknotes and placed on our table a bottle in which a parchment-like lizard was floating".

These could be called the "tasting notes": "It was not bad; it tasted like herbal orujo with fruit liqueur. We emptied the bottle. Raúl, somewhat dazed by the greenish liquor, had rested his arms on the tablecloth... He elbowed the bottle, which smashed on the floor, freeing the reptile from its glass prison. Raúl picked up the lizard, carefully removing the tiny pieces of glass".

Chinese tradition

In China you can find lizard liquor that can reach 60º alcohol and be sold with several whole lizards inside. According to Chinese tradition, it wards off evil spirits and improves sexual potency.

As I said at the start of this post, everything is a matter of taste, so the choice is yours...
