Licorea: 20 years telling the story behind every bottle

Licorea.com was born in 2004. At the time, selling online still sounded almost like science fiction. Talking about e-commerce, payment gateways, product pages or logistics for a specialist shop was, in many cases, like searching for a unicorn.

I came from other projects related to website creation and decided to apply that knowledge to the family business: a liquor store in Alicante that my family had opened in 1990. That is how the Licorea online shop was born, with the aim of bringing to the internet something that, until then, had belonged almost entirely to personal service, the counter, individual recommendations and conversations with customers.

From the very beginning, I knew I did not want to simply upload products to a website. I have always been deeply curious about drinks: their origins, their brands, their recipes, the people who create them and the stories that many bottles hide behind a label. So I tried to bring all that interest into the product pages I was creating on Licorea.com.

Because a bottle is rarely just a bottle.

Behind a whisky there may be generations of master distillers. Behind a rum, the story of a country, a plantation or a particular way of understanding time. Behind a gin, a botanical recipe, a trend, an aesthetic revolution or a rediscovered tradition. And behind a wine, a land, a harvest, a family and a way of looking at the world.

The birth of the Licorea blog

In 2006, I decided to use our Licorea.es domain to host a blog. The idea was to create a space where we could publish current news, industry updates and longer articles that did not always fit naturally into a product page.

Some comparisons needed more room. Some brands had stories that deserved to be told properly. Entire categories —whisky, rum, gin, vodka, tequila, liqueurs, wines, champagnes— invited a deeper look. And there were also trends, launches and curiosities that we wanted to share with our customers and readers.

That was how an adventure running alongside the online shop began: the Licorea blog.

Over all these years, we have published more than 1,950 news items and articles on all kinds of subjects related to the world of drinks. We have written about distilleries, limited editions, new brands, cocktails, history, culture, legislation, awards, consumer trends and launches that, in some cases, have gone on to become true classics.

One of the blog’s most widely shared moments came in 2007, almost at the very start of our journey, when one of our news stories gained international attention and was picked up by the BBC. For a project that was still taking its first steps, it was a sign that specialist content, created with care, judgement and passion, could travel much further than we had imagined.

A new chapter for Licorea content

Now, 20 years after the blog was born, we are taking a new step: we are moving all the content from Licorea.es to Licorea.com.

But this is not simply a matter of moving articles from one place to another. We are reviewing, updating and organising all the content accumulated over these two decades. Some news items have aged well and still offer value; others need to be expanded, corrected or placed in better context; and there is also content that no longer makes sense today and that we prefer to retire.

During this new stage, news items and articles from the former Licorea.es blog will appear in this space every day. It will not be a simple automated migration: each piece of content will be reviewed, updated and adapted before being published again on Licorea.com.

Some articles will retain their original value and become available again as part of our historical archive. Others will be expanded with new information, better context, updated data or more complete references. There will also be content we leave behind because it no longer makes sense today.

The idea is to recover twenty years of work, organise it and give it new life. We want the Licorea blog to be not only an archive of the past, but a living, up-to-date and useful space for everyone looking for information, curiosities, comparisons and stories about the world of drinks.

The goal is clear: to renew the Licorea blog and take it to a new level.

We want this space to once again become a reference point for those who are looking for more than just buying a bottle. We want to offer useful information, well-told stories, comparisons, guides, recommendations and specialist content for everyone who enjoys discovering products with personality.

In addition, making the most of today’s technology, we are preparing our publications in several languages: English, French, German and Italian. Licorea has always had an international outlook, and this new chapter of the blog will allow us to share our stories, knowledge and selections with more readers both in Spain and beyond.

We do not just sell bottles

If you did not know us yet, we invite you to discover our sections and visit Licorea.com.

We want to show you why, at Licorea, we know the products and give them the importance they deserve. For us, they are not simply bottles on a shelf or on a web page. They are a blend of history, folklore, innovation, tradition, fashion, territory and culture.

Every product has its moment. Every category has its own language. Every brand has something to say. And every person can find a drink that matches their tastes, a special occasion or a story worth sharing.

Licorea was born from a family liquor store in Alicante and grew online when selling on the internet was still unusual. Today we are still here with the same curiosity as ever, but with more experience, more perspective and more enthusiasm than ever to keep telling everything that lies behind every bottle.

Welcome to the new chapter of the Licorea blog.
