A Welsh Single Malt where oak makes all the difference
Penderyn Rich Oak is a Welsh Single Malt whisky whose distinctive character comes from a carefully selected combination of ex-bourbon casks and rejuvenated oak casks. These different types of oak create a creamy, complex expression in which rich wood influences complement the whisky's natural fruitiness.
Within the Penderyn range, Rich Oak stands out for its pronounced oak influence. Its flavour profile brings together dark chocolate, warming spices and tropical fruit, with a rich, rounded texture that makes it an appealing choice for those who enjoy a full-bodied, well-balanced Single Malt.
Maturation in ex-bourbon and rejuvenated oak casks
What sets Penderyn Rich Oak apart is its carefully chosen cask combination. The whisky begins its maturation in oak casks previously used for bourbon before being finished in rejuvenated European oak casks that previously held wine.
These casks have been reconditioned to restore some of the wood's ability to interact with the spirit. This process allows the oak to play a more prominent role, adding depth and complexity while preserving the whisky's original character and balance.
The result is a creamy, rounded whisky combining warming spices, rich oak notes and fresh fruit, giving Rich Oak a distinctive identity within the Penderyn range.
How to enjoy Penderyn Rich Oak
We recommend trying it first neat, at room temperature, in a tulip-shaped whisky glass. Allowing it to rest for a few minutes helps reveal the interplay between the fruity character of the spirit and the flavours developed during cask maturation.
You can also add a small amount of water to explore how its character develops. Just a few drops may subtly change the perception of its texture and oak notes without overly diluting the whisky.
It is an excellent choice for a relaxed after-dinner dram, particularly alongside dark chocolate or toasted nuts. At Licorea, we recommend it to those who appreciate oak-influenced Single Malt whiskies and want to discover a Welsh expression in which cask maturation takes centre stage.
