Ron Prohibido Reserva 22 comes from a tradition that dates back to the 1700s
Around the year 1700, Spanish ships arrived at the new continent loaded with products from the peninsula and holds full of casks containing sultana wine, which was unloaded in New Spain.
In order not to return empty, those barrels containing leftover beverages were filled with "Chinguirito" rum, a sugar cane brandy, a product made in Mexico.
However, on the return journey it received the gifts of the wood and on its arrival in Spain it had exquisite characteristics, which is why it began to be so popular among the Spaniards.
This fact caused it to be seen as a threat to the country's beverages; the King finally decided to prohibit the production of this drink, also called "Habanero".
It received this name because Havana was the last port that ships touched before returning to Spain, and this is how the original recipe for Ron Prohibido 12 and Ron Prohibido XV Gran Reserva Selecta of 15 casks was born.
At the end of the 18th century, royal permission was granted for the production of Mexican white rum "Chinguirito" as one of the main sources of income for the Spanish crown during its war against England.
Three centuries after the prohibition, the royal order of 19 March 1796 allowed its production, sale and consumption. Consequently, from that time onwards, Silver Rum would be used as a remedy for all kinds of ailments.
The Reserve 22
Canes that grew in the lands of Veracruz were selected and specially cared for so that they could give the best Reserva 22 Rum; extracting from them the "guarapo" or cane spirit.
The distillery chooses the best 22 American oak barrels to mature using the solera system and provide a smooth, light toasting that gives refined flavours. The first 4 barrels are filled and macerated in walnut shells, almond shells and peaches from Zacatecas, Mexico; the rest are filled with guarapo. The result is a golden amber-coloured rum with a brilliant hue and glints of ochre tones. Its body structure makes it a light rum with great silkiness.
