Curaçao is a drink from the island of Curaçao in the Dutch Antilles.

A bitter orange variety called laraha is used to make Curaçao.

The origin of the laraha comes from the Spanish Valencian orange. After the discovery of the island by Spanish explorers, the Valencian orange variety it was planted on the island, which was transported on the ship.

The much larger and sweeter Valencian orange evolved due to the climate and soil of Curaçao into a much smaller, bitter and totally inedible type of orange.

The local farmers eventually discovered that this type of orange had special properties concentrated in its peel and that when the peel it was exposed to the sun to dry, it evolved very fragrant oils.

Experimentation with these special oils led to the creation of Curaçao liqueurs.

Today, Curaçao is an indispensable element in cocktails.
