The Isle of Islay is the world's most famous malt whisky making island.
The island is rich in an organic material called peat, which is used in the drying of barley and gives the island's whisky its characteristic smoky aroma.
The distilleries are located on the shores of the island, which gives the whiskies produced saline, iodine and medicinal notes that combine with the smokiness to create whiskies that are unique in the world.
