One of the most remarkable malt whiskies of its kind.
The Bowmore Distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland, and has been on the shores of Loch Indaal on the Hebridean Island of Islay since 1779. It is very close to the sea which is vital in shaping the final character of Bowmore Islay Single Malt, as a strict adherent to the means of production continued by the Morrison Bowmore Distillers in 1963 like its four previous owners.
Bowmore is produced using water from the Laggan River. For 2000 years the river has flowed down the hills and contains the characteristic Islay Peat, the same peat that burns in the kiln to dry the malt. The famous Bowmore chambers are where whisky spends nearly its entire life. For several decades it rests in damp cellars below sea level. Spanish and American oak barrels impart richness and smoothness to the flavor while the aging takes place.
Peat, water, wood, people, and tradition come together to create the subtle, warm, smoky character of Bowmore whiskey.
