Lucas Bols BV is the oldest Dutch company still active, and the oldest distillery brand in the world. Since April 2006 it is back in Dutch hands thanks to a buy-out by the management and investor AAC Capital Partners. Lucas Bols has returned to the city where it all began in 1575: Amsterdam. Bols has mastered the art of mixing and blending; with old recipes and new flavors. Liqueur, genever, Corenwijn and gin. Both pure or as part of an exciting range of cocktails.
Bols liqueurs are significantly better than those of the competition in many respects. This commercial message has now been established as fact in a study by CSO, the well-known international institute for taste and aroma research. A 24-member team of neutral panellists recently reached the conclusion (with staggering - but pleasant for Bols! - certainty) that Bols liqueurs are far ahead of the competition.
The taste and aroma test conducted by the panel focused on the ten most important flavours of Bols and its competitors. In the blind test, Bols products scored particularly well as far as natural and full-bodied aroma are concerned, and where a full-bodied and soft flavour are involved. Bols liqueurs were judged as significantly better than the other brands over the whole line. CSO also conducted qualitative research. Fourteen international bartenders shared their views with the interviewers as to quality and applicability. The bartenders said, among other things, that they preferred Bols for its "real", fruity flavour, the excellent aroma and the proper density of the liqueurs. According to the bartenders, professionals always need new products with fruity flavours and strong, clear colours.
BOLS TRIPLE SEC
Bols Triple Sec follows the typical triple sec trait of being clear, though at 21% ABV does come in fairly weak compared to many triple sec offerings. The nose has a sharp, bright combination of orange zest and alcohol that greatly contrasts the mellow Dry Orange smell. The initial taste almost perfectly mirrors the nose, with a bright but not particularly strong orange flavour.
This orange flavour continues in to the finish, with a more zesty component developing as time goes on. To my surprise, given the low alcohol content, this triple sec develops a mild but noticeable burn towards the end. The sweetness was unremarkable, being neither too strong nor notably absent – unlike some triple secs my notes mention sweetness only at the very end, almost as as afterthought.
