The origins of The Famous Grouse started at the beginning of the 19th century, when Matthew Gloag took control of his family's farm and wine business in Perth, Scotland.
Matthew also started to sell selected Scottish malts and gained a successful reputation. In 1860 his son William took control of the company and started to add whisky blends to the range of beverages that the business offered. In 1896 the son of William, named Matthew after his grandfather, created a blend called "The Grouse Brand" which quickly gained fame in Perth, and was subsequently changed to Famous Grouse.

Since 1980 "The Famous Grouse" has been the number one whisky in England.
