Beautiful Guyana - land of many waters, an eco- tourist's haven of vast, pristine tropical forests, a plentitude of flora and fauna, undulating mountains, a multitude of rapids and waterways, home to the world's tallest wooden building - the St. George's Cathedral, home to the mighty, thunderous Kaieteur falls - the world's highest single drop waterfalls, and home to the El Dorado range of rums - the world's best rums.
The El Dorado range of rums are distilled, blended and bottled by Demerara Distillers Limited - located on the East Bank of the age old, world famous county of Demerara. Demerara is popular across the world for its rich, unmatched history of in excess of 300 years of sugar and rum production. In the 17th and 18th centuries, there were in excess of 200 small distilleries operating, each attached to the existing sugar plantations, from which a special blend of rum was produced. However, with the passage of time, consolidation and amalgamation, today, there remains just the one distillery at Plantation Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara - wholly owned and operated by Demerara Distillers Limited.
At this distillery, the standards and methods of the age-old industry have been maintained, working in tandem with the most up to date facilities and equipment. The old wooden coffey still continues to be used in the production process. This is the last operating still of its kind in the world today, and rum connoisseurs attribute the uniqueness of the Demerara rums, to this still. In addition, the distillery makes use of a wooden pot still for the production of the very aromatic, flavourful, heavy rums that are widely sought the world over. This still is again the last operating of its kind in the world, and the resultant rum, is so very distinctive that rum experts opined that it is the wood of the still that lends the flavours and congeners to the rums.
The distillery has the capacity to produce in excess of 26 M litres of pure alcohol annually, and is the largest supplier of bulk rums and alcohols from the Caribbean to brand owners in Europe and North America. The company's impressive list of clientele includes companies such as Diageo, Jim Beam Brands, Hiram Walker, Allied Distillers, and Corby's.
At the distillery, a strict ageing programme is enforced - the rums are aged in 45 gallon oak casks. With a warehousing capacity of 50,000 of these oak casks, the company has assured supplies of aged rums for the production of the El Dorado 25 years old, the El Dorado 21 year old, the El Dorado 15 years old, the El Dorado 12 years old and the El Dorado 5 years old rums.
Demerara Distillers is in the vanguard of producing and marketing premium aged rums. In 1992, the company introduced its El Dorado range of rums to the local and international markets. The story of El Dorado tells of explorers who came to old Guiana in search of the golden city (EL DORADO), described in a legend. The legend describes a king who would usually have gold dust blown on his body, so consequentially; he appeared to be of gold. His whole city of Manoa (in Rupununi, in the heartland of Guyana), the legend continues, was made of gold.
The El Dorado range of rums, often referred to as the Liquid Gold of Guyana, is a premium range of rums, produced by Demerara Distillers. In 2000, Demerara Distillers had the distinguished privilege of hosting the Prince of Wales - HRH Prince Charles at the company's operations site, where he tasted all of the El Dorado premium rums. HRH was overwhelming in praise for each of the rums, especially the El Dorado 15 years old Special Reserve Rum.
El Dorado Reserve 15 Years Old
Premier in the range of rums, is the El Dorado 15 years old Special Reserve Rum. Described as ""….attractive, rich copper hue,. A complex nose of confectioner' s sugar, banana and cedar. A silky entry leads to a moderately full-bodied palate of vibrant, yet refined dry caramel and grilled tropical fruit flavours braced by warm alcohol, and firm, smooth oak spice. Somewhat Scotch like, with subtle peaty overtones. Beautifully proportioned and designed for long contemplative sipping." (Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute), this premium product of great distinction is a blend of specially selected aged rums, some as old as 25 years old, blended to perfection by the company's master blenders and aged in oak casks. To complement this fine product, the rum is packaged in a gold embossed presentation box illustrated with a maritime design, underlying Demerara Distillers' association with ancient maritime traditions. The bottle, a unique custom designed bottle, was inspired by the shape of the old hand blown flasks used on the banks of the Demerara river, centuries ago, by the sugar planters.
Such pride and care was rewarded in 1998, when the International Wine and Spirit Competition of London voted the El Dorado 15 years old Special Reserve rum, the Best Rum Worldwide, and gave the company, the coveted Wray and Nephew Trophy. Then in 1999, 2000 and 2001, the 15 years old Special Reserve rum was judged Best Rum in the World, won the Wray and Nephew Trophy and is today known as the world's only rum to achieve such a feat. In 2002 and 2003, the Gold Medal was awarded to the El Dorado 15 Years Old Special Reserve at the International Wine and Spirit Competition of London and the International Rum Festival, in the Super Premium Category.
