The winery where Cesilia wines are currently produced has its origins in the heretat that the Marquis of Romana created in 1707: the Heretat de Cesilia.
The system of heretats was chosen by King Jaume I for the repopulation and colonization of the conquered lands. A heretat was a group of lands united according to a criterion of exploitation. It basically consisted of a house, an orchard and a certain amount of land destined to the cultivation of cereals and vineyards.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the port of Alicante was the most strategic commercial point in the region, and the region's wines, increasingly prestigious and in demand by the European elite, were exported in large quantities. Among the wines produced in the vicinity of Alicante, those from the Vinalopó Valley, where Novelda was the most important town in the area, stood out.
An ambitious oenological project
The Casa Sicilia 1707 estate still stands today on the outskirts of Novelda, in the same place where the Marqués de la Romana saw the birth of his estate. It extends over four areas of Novelda: Alcaydías, Ledua, La Mola and Sicilia, and is situated in a congost, a short distance from the hill of "La Mola", where the Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena and the Castle of La Mola (La Muela) are located.
The Arias family acquired this estate in 1984, where they are developing an ambitious oenological project. Through an interesting fusion of tradition and modernity, and with a team of high-level professionals, they have turned Cesilia wines into a symbol of the Mediterranean.
