Absinthe: the legendary wormwood spirit with iconic character

Absinthe, also known as “the green fairy”, is one of Europe’s most iconic and enigmatic spirits. Popularised in the 19th century in France and Switzerland, it became the drink of choice for artists and bohemians. Its intense personality, defined by wormwood and other aromatic herbs, makes it a unique category among high-proof liqueurs.

Today, absinthe is experiencing a revival, with traditional production methods and an authentic aromatic profile being rediscovered.

The secret of its production

Absinthe is made by macerating and then distilling herbs, with wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) as the key ingredient. It is combined with green anise, fennel and other aromatic plants that add complexity and freshness. After distillation, some versions are naturally coloured with additional herbs. The result is an intense, herbal and anise-led spirit with a distinctly dry and persistent character.

Our catalogue: Which absinthe to choose?

In our selection you will find different styles to suit a range of preferences, from classic expressions to more modern interpretations. Alcohol strength and aromatic profile are key factors when choosing:

  • Classic Green Absinthe: the most traditional style, with a strong anise and herbal presence, ideal for the ritual with cold water and sugar.
  • Black Absinthe: more intense and spiced, with deeper nuances and a warmer sensation on the palate.
  • Red Absinthe: a more modern variant, slightly sweeter and visually striking, also suited to creative cocktails.

Answering common questions about Absinthe

How strong is absinthe?

Absinthe generally ranges between 55% and 89% ABV, with many versions around 70%. It is one of the highest-strength spirits on the market, so it is recommended to enjoy it diluted or in small quantities.

What is wormwood in absinthe?

Wormwood is the essential aromatic plant in absinthe’s recipe. It provides the characteristic bitterness and much of its herbal complexity. Historically surrounded by myths, modern versions fully comply with European regulations regarding its content.

How much does absinthe cost?

The price of absinthe varies depending on the brand, alcohol strength and production method. Classic versions are usually competitively priced within the premium spirits category, while artisanal or high-strength editions may be positioned at a higher level.

Absinthe in cocktails: tradition and creativity

Although traditionally enjoyed through the classic ritual, absinthe is also an interesting ingredient in contemporary mixology.

Classic Absinthe Ritual with Classic Green Absinthe

Pour 30 ml of Classic Green Absinthe into a glass, place a perforated spoon with a sugar cube on top, and slowly add 90–120 ml of cold water. The drink becomes cloudy (the louche effect) and its intensity softens.

Absinthe Frappé with Classic Green Absinthe

45 ml of Classic Green Absinthe, 15 ml of sugar syrup and crushed ice. Shake lightly and serve in a tall glass. Refreshing and aromatic.

Sazerac with a touch of Absinthe

Rinse the glass with a few millilitres of Absinthe, add 50 ml of whisky, sugar and a few dashes of Angostura bitters. Stir with ice and serve with a twist of lemon peel. The absinthe adds an elegant herbal note.
