The 75 hectares of vineyards owned by Bodegas Ysios are set in the highest area of La Rioja, stretching across the localities of Laguardia and El Villar, in Rioja Alavesa. They have an Atlantic climate with a more Mediterranean or Continental influence depending on the specific geographical location of each plot, and enjoy the protection of the Sierra Cantabria which shelters the vineyards from the cold, humid winds coming from the northeast. The continental climate gives the wine higher acidity and a greater concentration, whilst the Mediterranean climate brings out the fruitiness of the wine.
All the grapes from our vineyards are 100% Tempranillo, the Riojan variety par excellence. Our vine stock has an average age of 30 years and is principally goblet trained.
One of the most characteristic features of our vineyards is the small plot size, with plots of land ranging from 0.5 to 4 hectares. This enables us to provide specific care to each vineyard, according to its own individual character.
Standing in the loveliest part of the Rioja Alavesa the surprising silhouette rises of Bodegas Ysios, conceived as the spearhead of the Rioja appellation in the 21st century.
Bodegas Ysios, conceived as a temple dedicated to wine and inaugurated in 2001, has rapidly become the pioneering "signature winery" in La Rioja, setting the trend for the construction of a steady progression of avant-garde wineries, a trend which still continues today.
For the project development, Ysios turned to a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, headed by the reputed architect Santiago Calatrava. His mission was to construct a unique, avant-garde winery, conceived as a place of worship, a place exclusively dedicated to the creation of wines boasting nothing less than the highest quality, with the decisive guidance of expert oenologists.
Its name, Ysios, pays specific homage to Isis and Osiris, two Egyptian gods closely related to the world of wine.
Luis Zudaire is an Agricultural Engineer and Enologist, graduating from the University of Montpellier, France. After gaining experience in a number of winemaking areas around the world, such as Chile, Argentina and France, he decided to return to La Rioja Alavesa to dedicate himself fully to making the prestigious wines of Bodegas Ysios.
At Bodegas Ysios, his work is directed at producing wines which clearly express the Rioja identity whilst incorporating the latest oenological trends, such as enhancing the fruit and the complexity of the different terroirs through ageing in barrels with different types of oaks and different toasting levels. In short, Luis Zudaire is seeking to get the most out of each particular terroir and to achieve a perfect combination of hues, aromas and flavours. Pure alchemy!
YSIOS RESERVE
Ysios Reserva is a highly complex, elegant wine, reflecting the variety of oaks and toasting levels used by the oenologist during the wine-making process.
Vinification and Ageing
The wine is fermented at a temperature of 28 - 30ºC for 20 to 30 days and is then aged for 14 to 16 months in French, American and Hungarian oak barrels. This process is completed with at least 22 months in the bottle.
