Reserve Red Wine from La Rioja
Traditionally, the winemaker marked the barrels with the letters XR in chalk, to identify barrels with special characteristics, and the winery kept them for analysis. XR by Marqués de Riscal is the commercialization of one of these exceptional wines.

At Marqués de Riscal, there were wines for the winemaker within their Historical Reserve, such as the Reserva Medoc and the XR, without becoming commercial names.
In the style of the Bordeaux cellar masters, the winemaker wrote the word XR in chalk on the barrels where he found some special characteristics not found in others.
These wines were never commercialized, but they were always a reference for the master winemaker. This tradition lasted almost a century, from the 1869 to 1964 harvests.
XR by Marqués de Riscal is a tribute to all the master winemakers who, from Jean Pineau to the present day, have contributed to shaping part of the best history of Spanish wine at Marqués de Riscal.
Autumn and winter were lacking in rainfall.
The months of February and March had especially warm temperatures.
Budding took place on April 9th. A strong frost was recorded on April 28th, causing major damage in almost all areas of our region.
The harvest began in a generalized way on September 14th and took place under dry conditions and optimal ripening conditions.
Deep cherry colour with an edge that expresses liveliness.
It starts off somewhat closed, much like the good Bordeaux wines. Smoky memories emerge, spiced (nutmeg, cinnamon), black licorice, ripe fruits, red-black (blueberries, blackcurrant), balsamic with very good intensity. Perfectly integrated wood.
The palate has tension, a lot of youth, highlighting a creamy texture that fills the mouth. The tannins are lively and ripe of high quality. It is broad and long, meaty and structured, yet elegant with a fruity finish and great freshness.
