A pleasure to share that evokes the beauty of the Mediterranean and its unique places
The surname Torres has been linked to wine for more than three centuries, when our ancestors settled in the Penedès, a wine region since Phoenician times.
Our family dedicated themselves to the cultivation of their land, passing on their dedication from generation to generation, and it was some years before we began to market our wines. It was in 1800, when our commercial activity began, with a horse-drawn cart that transported the wine in wooden barrels.
It was upon the return of Jaime Torres Vendrell from Cuba that the Torres family began its national and international expansion. Jaime Torres, arrived with the idea of exporting the wines from Catalonia to Cuba, Argentina and Puerto Rico.
In 1870 Jaime and Miguel Torres Vendrell, together with their father, formed the Torres y CIA company and the construction of the first winery in Vilafranca del Penedès began.
Our wines gained great prestige wherever the intrepid captains of Sitges and Vilanova transported them. Cartagena de Indias, Santiago de Cuba, Veracruz, Bremen, Hamburg and Saint Petersburg were some of their destinations. They obtained prizes and honorable mentions in Vienna, Philadelphia and Paris.
The Torres family's restless spirit meant that they did not only dedicate themselves to winemaking, from the very beginning the distillation of brandies played an important role; Juan Torres Casals was the great promoter of brandy around 1928.
The tenacity and risk-taking spirit of Miguel Torres Carbó is responsible for Torres' expansion throughout the world. He always remembered his beginnings, with his bottles in hand selling them to the best restaurants and shops of the time.
The Civil War caused a great crisis. In 1939 our winery was bombed, but with the efforts of Miguel Torres Carbó and the help of Doña Margarita, his wife, it was rebuilt.
Since then, Torres' progress in the world has continued to grow and settle. In 1979 the winery in Chile's Central Valley (Curicó) was opened; there a great variety of our wines are made in privileged phylloxera-free lands, as the whole country is free of it.
Marimar Torres is Torres' great presence in California. She is the creator of such elegant wines as her Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These wines grow in a vineyard in the Sonoma County Appellation of Origin, Russian River/Green Valley.
The family, generation after generation, has passed on the secret of making their great wines and the love of their land. This tradition, and their vision of the future, has made Torres a great export company that currently reaches more than 130 countries.
Viña Esmeralda
In the mountainous area of the Upper Penedès, the most delicate and aromatic white grape varieties are grown: Moscatel and Gewürztraminer , which are the basis of Viña Esmeralda, an exceptionally delicate, aromatic and fragrant wine.
