The Macallan Art is the Flower has been crafted with reverence to honour the circularity of nature, as depicted in Mackintosh’s 1902 stained-glass panel, “The Spirit of the Rose”. Mackintosh poetically viewed art as the flower of the green leaf of life. He called upon the artistic and craft community to “offer the flowers of art within you, the symbols of all that is noble, beautiful, and inspiring.”

The Special Meaning of the Poetry

The Macallan Art is the Flower takes its name from a lecture given by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1902.

To commemorate the special significance of this poetry, The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society selected the following poetic passage, which is featured inside the exquisite packaging:

“Art is the flower – life is the green leaf / Let every artist strive to make their flower a living thing of beauty – something to convince the world that there may be – there are things more precious – more beautiful – more lasting than life.”

“But to do this, you must offer living flowers, flowers of beautiful colours, flowers that grow above the green leaf, flowers that are not dead, not dying, not artificial – real flowers that spring from your own soul, not even cut flowers – you must offer the flowers of art that are within you, the symbols of all that is noble, beautiful and inspiring, flowers that will often change a colourless, joyless life into something bright and thoughtful.”
