Mar de Frades, a wine that grows overlooking the sea in this enclave of the Arosa Estuary.
Mar de Frades was born in 1987 and its trajectory is parallel to that of the Rias Baixas Denomination of Origin. It is a pioneering winery in the area and represents the interpretation of the most deeply rooted tradition of the Val do Salmés, the historical capital of the Albariño. This is where the legend of the Albariño varietal wines began and where, without a doubt, the most sophisticated and suggestive white wines of Spain are produced, characteristic for their freshness and aromatic intensity. The Albariño vines were brought to the valley in the 12th century from the Rhine by the Cluny monks, who landed in a place on the Ría de Arousa called Mar de Frades. Hence they resemble the Riesling variety. Until the last century, the wines of the Rías Baixas enjoyed well-deserved fame; however, at the end of the 19th century, plagues devastated European vineyards and in Galicia there was a change of varieties towards other more productive and resistant ones.
In 1970, a group of enthusiastic winegrowers began the recovery of the native vines and especially that of the most excellent of them all, Albariño. This is how Mar de Frades was born, a wine that grows overlooking the sea in this enclave of the Arosa Estuary. And that is where the new winery was built.
On the slopes of the Valiñas mountain, the 4 hectares of the Valiñas estate are spread out. This 22-year-old vineyard, with old Albariño vines, spreads its fruit out in front of the Mar de Frades, which tempers and protects it. The plot is settled on well-drained granitic and sandy soils.
Mar de Frades also has 47 hectares of controlled vineyards in the Val do Salnés, with a northwest-southeast orientation.

Herbs Orujo de Albariño Mar de Frades
Albariño's Herbs Orujo is produced from the bagasse of Albariño grapes and aromatic herbs, in copper stills. It is then distilled with 7 more types of herbs to achieve its distinct flavour.
The transparent bottle is a replica of the still in which it is distilled. The bottle is not guaranteed to arrive in a wooden case because this type of presentation is limited during the year.
