Our latest release, The Macallan Rare Cask, 2023 Release, boasts a collaboration with renowned musician, Charlie Burchill of Simple Minds. Embarking on an exquisite journey, we explored the intricacies of the sensory world, discovering the striking parallels between sound, aroma, flavour, and colour, all intertwined through the shared element of wood.
Charlie's remarkable talent in identifying rare tasting notes, such as raisin, resonates beautifully with his ability to compose and play music. The art of creating exceptional single malts and music share a common language, where each note and flavour combine in perfect harmony, complementing one another in a remarkable way.

CHARLIE BURCHILL
Charlie is a composer and multi-instrumentalist, occasionally swapping guitar for keyboards, saxophone and even violin. Now known as one of the most distinctive guitarists in the business, he has been involved in the creation of the amazing sound of Simple Minds for over 40 years.
Charlie Burchill and Jim Kerr were childhood friends who performed together in early school bands, a short-lived punk outfit and then Simple Minds, which they formed in 1977. Their friendship is one relationship that has gone the distance, being as strong today as it was back then.
The harmonious interplay between music and whisky can evoke powerful emotions and memories. Charlie tells the story under his vision connecting the taste of the whisky to his music, as notes blend together to create a sound that immerses the senses similarly that whisky flavours and aromas come together to form sensory experience, bringing us back to a certain place or time.
Notes from the electric guitar are used to explore the flavours and sensations and treasures of this rare whisky. Each chord seeks to unlock the complex notes of this exceptional single malt, creating a symphony of taste and sound. Through Charlie’s guitar and music, we penetrate the inner soul of the artist and how the tasting notes of the whisky trigger those emotions, those feelings, those memories.

The significance of the wood in both Charlie's guitar and The Macallan Rare Cask, 2023 Release serves as a vital element that unites these two worlds. With his expertise in music, Charlie envisions the sounds of Rare Cask, working closely with a skilled Luthier in the South of Spain, home of the luthier and The Macallan oak casks.
Together, they crafted a guitar from the same wood that The Macallan employs in our Exceptional Oak Casks. Through his artistry, Charlie brings to life the incredible journey of Rare Cask, evoking the rich and profound notes of this rare single malt.
