More information Sweet Guayabita del Pinar Rum
The origin of this flavourful Vueltabajo liquor, as it is known today, cannot be exactly defined. However, it is known that at the end of the 16th century there were Spanish families settled on the Banks of the Cuyaguateje River in the River Pine province, and they first mixed the Vueltabajo liquor and sugar with the small fruit of the wildly grown guava tree.

The creation of Guayabita del Pinar started with Lucio Garay Zabala, an enterprising businessman who assembled an alcohol producing factory in 1892. He already knew how this liquor made by his neighbours was used in medicine and as a digestive, so he had a good knowledge base for transforming this Vueltabajo liquor into a refined drink.
Historians are sure that Garay Zabala contributed his ingenuity and knowledge, bringing the Guayabita to a peak of excellence that gained him fame in the rum market and also won him international awards. River Pine, named first New Philippines, started to become populated in 1699. It acquired its actual name in 1776, influenced by the main population that lived next to the Guamá River and were surrounded by extensive woods of pine.
This province, located in the most western region of Cuba, expands 10.925 square kilometres and is divided by two mountain ranges. One is Sierra Del Rosario, a global biosphere reserve, and the other is Sierra de los Organos, where the oldest caves in North America exist.
