More information Glen Elgin 12 years (Speyside) Whisky
Glen Elgin is a single malt distillery located in the Speyside region, near the town of Elgin. Although it is best known for being one of the main ingredients in the famous White Horse blended Scotch whisky, which sells over 12 million bottles a year worldwide, Glen Elgin’s single malt bottlings are rare to find but are well worth it for their exquisite flavour.
The Glen Elgin distillery was founded in 1898 by William Simpson, a former manager of the Glenfarclas distillery, and James Carle, a local banker. It is located on the outskirts of Elgin, near the quiet village of Fogwatt, and was the last distillery designed by the renowned architect Charles Doig during the Victorian era. Despite its promising start, the distillery faced several issues and only managed to operate for five months during its first eight years of existence.
The Glen Elgin 12-year-old, its most well-known single malt version, stands out for its production through a distillation system that incorporates 'Worm tubes'. This process gives it a unique and distinctive character, different from whiskies cooled using modern condensers, according to experts. The result is a whisky with remarkable complexity, rich in aroma and sweetness, that delights whisky enthusiasts.
