More information Fondillon Luis XIV Reserve 25 years Wine
Fondillón Luis XIV comes from the centennial reserves of Bodegas Ferrero
In 1960 Bodegas Ferrero closed its doors, following the progressive oblivion of the wine Fondillón and the abandonment of the Monastrell grape cultivation at that time, and the rise of the Cooperative Winery which led to the closure of many private wineries that produced wine.
The winemaker David Carbonell, during his visit to Bodegas Ferrero, discovered a barrel room that held a dual treasure: on one side, a collection of 25 barrels and casks from the late 19th and early 20th century; on the other, their contents, very old soleras that have been preserved intact since the winery's closure more than 60 years ago.
From this discovery, in 2018 the Collection of Centenary Barrels was born: we are talking about 10 barrels of 800 liters, 4 barrels of 850 liters, and 11 casks of 500 liters, preserved in conditions of constant temperature, light, and humidity. In other words, a true treasure that has been sealed and in optimal conditions for more than half a century.
The project is gradually growing with goals such as the production of wines suitable for producing Fondillón from the old vineyards of the former winery; classifying and preserving the barrels by resorting to the last coopers of the area; bottling and marketing the fondillones; and carrying out the topping up, sealing, and preservation until the next drawing.
The name Luis XIV is a tribute to the wine Dondillón and its tradition and the historical references that Louis XIV, the Sun King, used to take biscuits soaked in Fondillón de Alicante after dinner as advised by his doctor to improve his health.
Fondillón Luis XIV is composed of a blend from various 19th-century American oak barrels where the average age of the wine exceeds 25 years.
Bottled in May 2020 and limited to 750 units.

On the nose, warm aromas of dried fruits (hazelnuts, toasted Marcona almonds) and very old noble wood stand out.
On the palate, it is almost dry, pleasant, and very enveloping. Its aromas of hazelnuts, cinnamon, and dried figs combine with the creamy toasted notes of century-old oak.
Long and clean finish. |
