Cockspur 12 is the premium blend. Every year the master blender sets aside a few select barrels which are carefully evaluated as they reach ideal maturity, then blended to achieve great complexity and rich flavors.
Cockspur 12 contains the most mature rums on reserve at the distillery, most of which are 12 years or older. It has a beautifully intense sherry red color, with aromas that contain undertones of bourbon oak, banana and short bread. This rum is velvety smooth with a deeply rounded taste, featuring tones of wood and earth accompanied by a prolonged spiciness and a long warm dry finish.
Cockspur rum was founded in Barbados by Valdemar Hanschell in 1884. Emigrating from Denmark, he established a thriving ship's supply store in the bustling harbor town of Bridgetown. He sold a wide range of goods, provisioning many ships sailing to and from the Caribbean. His rum became quite popular and was considered an important and necessary staple commodity for seafarers in the region. The company, now evolved into Hanschell Inniss, still blends and bottles Cockspur today just outside of Bridgetown.
Cockspur is Barbados' leading golden rum and has won numerous awards internationally. These awards include the 'International Wine and Spirit Competition's' Gold Medal in 1981, 1984, and 1989.
