Château Lafitte: History and Excellence in Bordeaux Wines
Château Lafitte has been in existence since 1763, with its premier Côtes de Bordeaux wine produced, vinified, and bottled on the estate that bears its name, located in Camblanes and Meynac. Over the years, the estate has passed through the hands of various owners until being managed by SCEA Château Lafitte.
The name "Lafitte" dates back to the 18th century when, on February 12, 1763, the renowned local wine merchant Mr. Raymond Lafitte acquired the estate, giving his name to the vineyard. The property’s notoriety was documented in the second edition of Feret in 1868, attesting to its already well-established reputation.
In 1970, Juliette Mengin purchased the estate. Fascinated by its strategic location and the breathtaking views of the Garonne Valley, she began a series of significant improvements, including an extensive replanting campaign and the construction of a modern vat room to prepare for future harvests. Juliette Mengin was instrumental in the development of Château Lafitte.
In 1991, her son Max Mengin took over the management of the Château Lafitte brand. With his international experience, he gave the wine a new commercial boost. Juliette’s grandson, Philippe Mengin, traveled the world after his studies in oenology, gaining deep knowledge of wine export markets. Philippe modernized the estate's working methods and significantly improved wine quality, substantially expanding Château Lafitte’s presence in international markets.
Today, Château Lafitte exports 95% of its production, enjoying global recognition. The estate, located at the gates of Bordeaux, boasts a privileged view of the Garonne Valley, an ideal setting for viticulture.
A Vineyard with Exceptional Terroir
The vineyard, approximately 30 hectares in size and situated in a single plot, benefits from a magnificent terroir composed of:
- 40% stony gravel.
- 30% clay-limestone.
- 30% fine siliceous soils.
This combination of soils contributes to the unique typicity of Château Lafitte wines, which are crafted using a carefully balanced blend of grape varieties:
- 80% Merlot.
- 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Throughout the year, meticulous care is given to the vineyard to ensure the grapes reach optimal ripeness. Once this point is achieved, the vinification process begins, which includes:
- Harvesting, crushing, and destemming of the grapes.
- Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats.
- Maceration for 4 to 5 weeks.
- Malolactic fermentation.
Aging takes place over a period of 12 to 24 months, followed by bottling on-site. Annually, Château Lafitte produces approximately 200,000 bottles.
With a perfect combination of tradition, innovation, and respect for the land, Château Lafitte continues its legacy of excellence in producing high-quality wines, renowned for their elegance and authenticity.
