Bruichladdich distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey Brothers. The Harveys were a dynastic whisky family with over a century of century of distillery ownership, including Glasgow's Yoker and Dundas Hill Disitilleries. The Three brothers decided to combine their expertise to build a third harvey distillery: Robert designed it, John had the distilling experience, and william had the money

Bruichladdich was to be the very antithesis of an Islay farm distillery. This was to be a cathedral-like still house that (unlike their cow shed equivalents elsewhere) enveloped 6m tall stills designed to produce the purest spirit possible. Using concrete, a newly-patented building material, this was a modern, purpose-built distillery, ergonomically laid out around a central courtyard for efficiency, and on a gentle slope to exploit gravity – a state-of-the-art Victorian distillery with an annual capacity of 400,000 litres.

Bruichladdich Reserve 18 Years

This lightly-peated whisky spent 18 years maturing in ex-Bourbon casks before being finished in red pinot wine casks. The result is a malt that should appeal to lovers of Sherried whiskies, since the effect of the finishing process has been to give the whisky increased richness and complexity. Warm, sweet and slightly spicy on the nose, with a hint of rum and raisins. Full bodied in the mouth, quite viscous and smooth, with sweet Sherry, vanilla fudge, red wine and brittle toffee. Decidedly spicy in the finish. Bruichladdich dislikes the use of the term ‘finishing,’ preferring ‘additional cask evolution,’ but whatever you call it, this new addition to the distillery’s line up proves that when done well, the process can give a whisky a very attractive new dimension, without detracting from its original integrity.
