Bodegas Ramón Bilbao was founded in 1924. Already in the 19th century, the Bilbao Murga family and its head, Don Ramón, sold the Ramón Bilbao and Viña Turzaballa wines.
The winery was handed down from one generation to the next until the year 1966, when Ramón Bilbao Pozo, the last of the descendants, died.
In 1972, The business was converted into a corporation with new shareholders. New facilities were built, also in Haro. The new company wished to continue the work of its founder, Ramón Bilbao, and concentrated on making aged wines.
The family business Diego Zamora, S.A., one of the largest beverage groups in Spain and owner of the well-known brand Licor 43, acquired the winery in 1999 and began a new venture, renovating and adapting existing facilities.
The development of top-quality wines together with innovation while respecting the purest Riojan tradition represented by the history of the wines of Ramón Bilbao, are the trademark of this emblematic company in Rioja Alta. The philosophy that inspires the work carried out at the winery is the same philosophy that has prevailed, generation after generation, turning the men and women who work at our bodega into true experts in the art of ageing wines: grapes from the best estates and vineyards, casks made of the best oak from European and American forests, and all of this enhanced by the care and know-how of people who love wine above all else.
Bodegas Ramón Bilbao has two separate vinification-reception-fermentation areas, each with its selection table and French oak vats. There are also different buildings —one for storage, another air-conditioned structure for oak cask ageing, and a third used for bottling and for housing the finished product. In addition, the bodega has underground cellars where the bottled wine is aged. The Bodega also has a visitors’ centre and a professional tasting room. All this has turned Bodegas Ramón Bilbao in Haro into one of the five most visited bodegas in the Rioja Designation of Origin.
Grapes: 100% Tempranillo. Harvest: When the grapes at Finca Valpierre attain their optimum ripeness (last week in October) we selectively harvest the best clusters of Tempranillo.
VINIFICATION
At the bodega’s sorting table we choose only the best clusters, those with perfect berries, to ferment them in oak vats at controlled temperatures. We age the wine for 14 months in new French and American oak casks. We then complete the ageing process in our underground bottle racks for a further 10 months.
TASTING NOTE
Intense dark cherry-red with a garnet rim. Complex aromas to the nose, redolent of prunes in liqueur, ripe blackberries and fine, exotic woods (sandalwood). Elegant and voluptuous in the mouth, with considerable persistence and a pleasant mineral finish. A powerful wine whose complexity will continue to grow over time. Drink now or cellar.
